Message from PIC president April 2024

　In April 2024, our new school year has begun. As is often reported, I suspect that recently many of us fell the ground shaking economically and geologically. From January to the current month, the tremors persist even though it has been a while since the Noto-Hanto earthquake. Moreover, the yen is depreciating, which is starting to affect the Japanese economy in various ways. It is clear that we are not immune to the effects of global inflation. At the same time, the radical transformation of global society has brought confusion and unrest to our lives. During these times of changes and uncertainty, the importance of school education and recurrent education as lifelong learning will become more and more important in our society. We are now living in the Anthropocene or “Jinshinsei”, which has not been approved as an official subdivision of geologic time. However, I think that the term is necessary and sufficient in order to show the commencement of significant human impact on Earth. We may be the first generation to bear a heavy responsibility not only for our society but also for the global environments.

　Amid this rapidly changing our society, the functions of a school, including PIC, need to be restructured, and each of us should realize that it is our responsibility to take the role.
If our society need new leaders for next generation, we would like to make a meritorious contribution through our education. Although “leaders” are difficult to give a clear definition, I think that real leaders must understand what leadership is and what followership is. It is obvious that the leaders of our future are not self-styled leaders with an attitude of arrogant superiority, but intellectuals with cool head and warm heart.

　As our society goes towards information-based society, we are facing various issues on a global scale that must be tackled, including many difficult problems related to the environment, education, technology, social welfares and international relation. As a school, not only students but also each of teachers must strengthen our problem-solving capacities. I sincerely hope that even though we are a small group of only about 20 professional teachers and instructors, PIC becomes a hub of Keio students for outstanding education. Our dedicated faculty and staff members work together to create and enhance a robust learning environment for you. Future is always in our hands. We look forward to seeing you in PIC.
